Discover Lough Swilly, one of only three glacial fjords in Ireland

Did you know that Donegal is home to one of only three glacial fjords in Ireland? Lough Swilly lies between the western side of the Inishowen and Fanad peninsula and translates from the Irish Loch Súilí, meaning "Lake of Shadows" or the "Lake of Eyes”. The northern extremities of the lough are marked by Fanad Head and its lighthouse.

The best way to experience Lough Swilly is by boat and Eco Atlantic Adventures offers eco-friendly outdoor activities including kids’ kayaking camps, adult kayak tours, hill walking, rock climbing, coasteering, abseiling and morning beach bootcamps. They have kids kayak camps for aged 8+ running throughout the summer in Portsalon and Rathmullan.

One of their most popular activities for adults and over 16’s is the guided kayak tours to the Seven Arches Caves in Portsalon, exploring hidden caves and beaches only accessible by kayak, while enjoying spectacular scenery and the rugged Donegal coastline. Book here

You can also explore both sides of Lough Swilly by hopping aboard the Lough Swilly Ferry Service, which operates between Rathmullan and Buncrana throughout July and August. Guests are reminded to please maintain social distancing on board and are advised that the wearing of a face covering is mandatory when sitting in the sheltered seating area. No pre-booking is necessary and you can check out the timetable here.
